Seamless Crochet by Kristin Omdahl

As promised, I am back with more on Seamless Crochet with Kristin Omdahl. I hope you are enjoying the book blog tour so far.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, Seamless Crochet is a yet another awesome book by Kristin that you will want to get. You will learn a new technique on how to crochet "granny" squares seamlessly without having to weave tons of loose ends. Kristin's mentioning that the techniques is "old" technique; but it is probably new to most of us.

Blue Skies Bulky Cowl
The projects in this book vary from easy ones such as Radiance Sparkly Skinny Scarf, or Blue Skies Chunky Cowl. These projects offer you a great starting point to learning the seamless technique. Then you can advance to slightly more challenging ones. Though once you get the idea behind how to work granny squares seamlessly, I don't think any of the projects are too difficult to work. On contrary, the patterns are accompanied by charts that are super easy to follow. And if you are more of a follow-the-written-instructions crocheter, you will get that in addition to the charts.

My first project will be the Market Bag. In my area, stores have to charge customers for each bag they will "give" away, so to have a stylish and unique bag handy is a must. :)

INTERVIEW
And here is the promised interview with Kristin. Before we start I want to say that Kristin is such a nice person - beautiful inside out. Not only she's very beautiful as you can see (she was a model for several years when she was 12-17 yrs old), but she is very, very nice and easy to to talk to. I don't claim to know her very closely, but the several times I've met her, or we went out to dinner with her and other designer friends, she was so, so nice and fun.

Kristin Omdahl
Simona: I have long admired your work, and I am so excited to be doing an interview with you. Seamless Crochet is your fourth book, which is just as great as the first, second and third one. Where do you get your endless inspiration?

Kristin: I love what I do and try to keep an open mind wherever I am. I find inspiration in the strangest of places: I like to incorporate the textures of things around me into my fabrics. Animal skins, leaf and flower patterns, seashells, water patterns, brick patterns, tile patterns, and many more.

Simona: What inspired you to write this book?

Kristin: I saw a 4-color chart for this technique years ago and have been exploring with it for a long time. I wanted to figure out how to modify any crochet motif and even manipulate those motifs to create shaping. My goal was to write the book if I could accomplish all that. I wanted to write a book that could be a reference library addition as well as a pattern book. And the bonus is that I made a 1-hour DVD workshop, included in the book, as an added learning tool.

Simona: How do you chart all your designs? Do you do it all by hand or
you have a special software you use?

Kristin: It depends on how much time I have! I am not an expert at Illustrator, so it takes me a long time to make a rudimentary chart. If my charts are going to be made by someone in-house at the Pulisher’s office, I will hand-draw them. I’m way better at sketching than I am at Illustrator.

Simona: What is your favorite project in Seamless Crochet and why?

Buttercup Baby Blanket
Kristin: I have a couple of favorite projects, for different reasons. The Buttercup Baby Blanket is one of my favorites because it is so feminine! I love the look of the appliqued flowers (even though they are worked seamlessly along with the motifs!!) I would love to make some pillows with this motif one day. A luscious yarn with great halo in a deep red rose color would be gorgeous. The hats are favorite projects for me, too, because it was my way of proving to myself that you can make 3- dimensional projects with this technique. I would love to venture into sweater yoke design with this technique, now that I feel confident with the shaping element after making the hats.

Simona: How do you invent new motifs? Do you just “dream” them up; do you play with yarn and see what happens; or do you chart out and engineer your motifs first?

Kristin: All of the above! It depends on how or where I am inspired. Occasionally I need to chart or sketch first to see if it will work geometrically, but most of the time I prefer to grab yarn and get started. Trial & error is a great learning tool.

Lace Flower Hat
Simona: What is your favorite part of creating a collection and writing a book?

Kristin: I love coming up with the concept in the first place! The planning part is fantastic because anything is possible. As the items get checked off the to-do list, the accomplishments feel pretty good, too. The surprising part to me is that turning in the manuscript is not a highlight to me. As an entrepreneur, it means it’s time to find a new job. But oftentimes, I have already found one or more! I feel very fortunate about that.

Simona: Besides crochet and knitting, what other passions you have?

Kristin: I love to work out. Playing my piano and guitar are my zone-out times. Singing & playing guitar simultaneously takes just enough brain power to distract me from everything else going on. I love that. I love to cook. And, my new fascination is jewelry making. I’m excited about it and thinking of ways to incorporate it into my knitting and crochet business. I also LOVE to cook and especially come up with healthy modifications and my own recipes.

Simona: I know you like fitness and lead a healthy lifestyle. If I am not mistaken, you are an avid runner and ran a half marathon?

Kristin: I actually ran a full marathon 2 years ago (26.2 miles!) That was a one-time deal, though. I still run barefoot on the beach, but I prefer working out with weights in the gym. I’m trying to transform my body right now. I’m working out in a gym 3x a week, doing cardio (running or riding my bike) 3x a week and trying to eat very, very healthy. I am working on a crochet swimwear collection and my goal is to wear it! I figure you can’t talk the talk without walking the walk. I don’t want to be in supermodel shape, but I want to be the best Marilyn Monroe shape I can be.

Simona: Wow Kristin, you are very inspiring just like your knit and crochet designs! It is amazing that you ran a marathon! Marathon!!!?? Really? I've been running for years but I have not ever thought I could do that. You are very determined and you will get your swimwear bod - no question in my mind. Thank you for sharing!  It will make most of us to want to get to the gym tomorrow. :)

Thank you for the interview. And I am looking forward to seeing you in Columbus.

Are you also inspired by Kristin? Oh my, I am. I can't wait to see the swimwear collection.

Recap: TNNA - Phoenix, AZ 2012

The weekend before last, I flew to Phoenix, AZ for the semiannual needle arts trade show. It had been exactly 12 years since I had gone to Arizona. Then I was traveling with a 9-month old and have done quite a bit of sightseeing! This time I had seen not much more of the city than the Convention Center, a hotel and couple of restaurants.

This trade show was slightly different for me than the other trade shows before. I had spent majority of  time talking with people rather than walking the floor, so I had not gotten the whole scoop on the latest and the greatest.  The three days really don't seem to be enough to be able to see everything. But that's OK. I had spent time with my clients, friends and met new ones. While at the show, I had invested my time into brainstorming upcoming collections, came across some new opportunities and sparked some new ideas for the upcoming year.

So here we go. This is what I did.

I attended a few book signings.

Dora Ohrenstein's Custom Crocheted Sweaters book signing .

Kristin Omdahl's Seamless Crochet book singingwith Faina Goberstein.
Robyn Chachula's Simple Crochet book signing with Marly Bird and me.

I had met up with some of my favorite people: Faina Goberstein, Marly Bird, Linda Permann and Robyn Chachula; as always lots of fun.

Faina Goberstein and I.
Andee Graves, Faina Goberstein, Marly Bird, and me.
Robyn Chachula, me, Linda Permann, Jill Wright, and Tabetha Hedrick.
I enjoyed talking with fellow designers Tabetha Hedrick and Jill Wright.  It was nice to see  Anne Kuo Lukito of Crafty Diversions,  Kate Oates of Tot Toppers, Stefanie Japel from Craftsy, Grace Akhrem, Kristin Omdahl of Styled by Kristin, oh and many others.

With Grace Akhrem.
I had gotten the opportunity to meet a star designer Josh Bennett of Boy Meets Purl, who had introduced his new menswear knitting line with Rowan yarns. In addition to his own line, he works with Irina Shabayeva, the winner of one of the seasons of Project Runway. Go see her collection where you can see the knitwear Josh had worked on for her. Very impressive. What a talent.

Josh Bennett, me and Faina.
And of course, I saw some beautiful yarns. Below Linda Peramann, Marcy Smith, editor of Interweave Crochet, and I are at the Berroco's yarn tasting bar, knitting and crocheting with their newest yarns for Spring/Summer 2012.

Linda Permann, Marcy Smith and I at Berroco Yarn Bar.
Below you can see the new color scheme of Imperial Yarn.

Imperial yarn - new colors for spring/summer 2012
Lantern Moon has introduced the Scrumptious (45% silk, 55% merino) yarn designed by Jeni Hewlett of Fyberspates. The yarn is offered in a variety of weights ranging from lace to chunky. I really liked this one, it is so soft and has a beautiful sheen. I'm looking forward to getting an opportunity to work with it.

When I am at the show,  I usually forget to take pictures, but I think this year I got a bit better. What do you think?

Well and that's a wrap. :)

Book Review: Seamless Crochet by Kristin Omdahl

Blissful Flowers Shawl
I have always admired Kristin Omdahl's work because her sense of style is very modern and she brings crochet projects to a forefront of fashion. Her designs are fresh, stylish and suitable for every body type. When working on the projects you always learn something new: her creations are designed very thoughtfully with clever constructions. This book, Seamless Crochet: Techniques and Motifs for Join-As-You-Go Designs, is no exception. In fact, her innovated seamless-as-you-go technique is going to revolutionize how we crochet "granny" squares. No more weaving tens or even hundreds of ends!

Since this technique is new, Kirstin included an instructional video with the book so that we can learn exactly how to follow the charts when joining motifs seamlessly. She offers wide variety of designs: ranging from simple projects, on which you can learn the seamless technique, to more complex where you learn additional tricks and methods on how to shape seamlessly.

The book is divided into 4 chapters: Shawls, Accessories, Home Decor, and Babies and Kids. It's hard for me to pick my favorite projects because all of the projects in this book are very unique and I'd like to make them all. But based on the limited time I have to commit to crochet for pure fun, I can only pick a few projects and that's how I am picking my favorite designs in this book. Here we go:

New Imperial Knits Collection coming soon!

The new Imperial Knits Collection for Spring/Summer 2012 called Water is Life will be introduced next week at the TNNA in Phoenix, AZ.  The designer, Anna Cohen, had not only created the collection but also worked on creating the color schemes for some of the yarns in this collection. The few I had seen so far are really beautiful, so I cannot wait to see all the colors. If you are at TNNA next week, make sure to stop by Imperial Yarn booth to preview the whole collection and the yarns. I had written more about the Imperial Yarn Ranch company here.

This is my second time working with Anna on the collection for Imperial Yarn, doing the design interpretation for her.  As I might had mentioned in my previous posts, it is creatively another dimension to my own designing work, I get a wonderful opportunity to explore and implement. I enjoy helping Anna's vision come to life. You can read more about this Spring/Summer 2012 collection and how such collection comes to life in the latest Imperial Yarn eNewsletter. Thank you Anna for such nice words about our working together; it's been a delight!

If you had not gotten a chance yet, please check out the new Imperial Yarn group created on Raverly. You can also follow them on Facebook.

Happy New Year 2012!

Wishing you all the best in the New Year 2012! I hope for all of you to have a very successful and productive year.

As the new year starts, many people start with new year's resolutions. I had long given up on any new year resolutions, simply because they do not work. If you want to make a positive change in your life, you should not wait until January 1st. It is no magical date to successfully sustain a change in our lives. It is just an excuse to postpone the start of the change you want. This way we just make the beginning of the change to be out of our control. So if you want to make a positive change, do it today... right now. You will feel so empowered.

So for example, if you want to be healthy, behave as a healthy person...eat healthy, wholesome food, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water and get good night sleep. You can start slow, adding healthy foods only at dinner for example. Start taking 10-20 min walks to slowly begin your exercise regiment, and then add on few more minutes every week. Tell your friend(s) about the change you are planning on implementing; he or she will keep you accountable. :)

If you want to learn a new skill (knitting, crochet anyone?), look for a course in your area to take, or an on-line tutorial that can get you started. Set aside time on your schedule to devote to learning. All it takes is little steps. Little by little goes a long way.

Simply Crochet: Giselle Vest

Giselle Vest (Simply Crochet, Dec 2011)

This is a second stop on my blog on the Simply Crochet Countdown to Fun Blog Tour. The Giselle Vest is a second design I had contributed to Robyn Chachula's book Simply Crochet: 22 Stylish Designs for Every Day. The book is  now available for purchase in both hard copy and e-book.

This top vest is crochet in a beautiful flower lace design forming horizontal lines that is flattering to many body shapes. The top has an easy construction; the body is worked from side to side beginning and ending at center back finished with edging around the top and bottom edges and shoulder straps crocheted on. As all Robyn's books, the instructions are given in both written form and accompanied by charts.

Giselle is worked in Cascade Yarns, Heritage (75% merino superwash, 25% nylon; 437 yd/400 m /3.5 oz/ 100 g): #5648 strawberry cream with D/3 (3.25mm) hook. The yarn is very soft and very easy to work with. The yarn has a great yardage; you need only 2-3 hanks to make this top so it is very budget friendly.

What is your favorite fingering yarn to use for crochet projects? Let me know in the comments.

Next stop for the blog tour is tomorrow, December 15, 2011, at Robyn Chachula's  www.crochetbyfaye.blogspot.com.

Free Crochet Pattern: Pineapple Top

Hopefully by now you are finishing all your holiday gift projects and are getting ready to make something for yourself. You can start with making something for spring wear like the Pineapple Top. This is a light, lacy top you can wear over any tank top or even a long sleeve shirt to updated your look.

The top is worked in Cascade Yarns, Ultra Pima (100% pima cotton; 220 yd [200 m]/3.5 oz [100 g]) in color #3745 with F/5 (3.75 mm) size hook. The yarn is very easy to work with; the hook nicely slips as you crochet. The yarn has a slight shine and the fabric becomes even softer after it is blocked. Yummy, yummy yarn!

The Cascade Ultra Pima Pineapple Top is an easy crochet project that is worked sideways with minimal shaping. Starting at center back/front, the top is crocheted to sleeve edge. After each left and right sides are finished, the two pieces are joined at center back and center front, then the lower band is worked downward. You can easily modify how deep you want your v-neck to be.

Pineapple top is available as a free download on Cascade Yarns website.

Hope you will enjoy!

Simply Crochet: Emma Lace Scarf

Emma Lace Scarf is a very special project for me.  It is one of the two projects I contributed to Robyn Chachula's newest crochet book Simply Crochet: 22 Stylish Designs for Every Day; and it is my first project I had contributed to any of Robyn's books. I felt honored when she asked me to submit to her book since she's one of the crochet designers whose work I have long admired. Furthermore, many talented crochet designers I love, and nearly all of them who I am friends with, have showcased their designs in this book.

The Emma Lace Scarf  was inspired by a leather belt in a Victorian style I saw on a runway couple of years ago.  I loved the ornate and romantic look of it and wanted to translate it into crochet. So I made a swatch in this beautiful stitch pattern initially not even knowing what I am going to use it for. The scarf is made in Lion Brand Yarn, LB Collection Superwash Merino (100% Superwash Merino; 306 yd 280 m/3.5 oz 100 g): #114 cayenne, with size G/6 (4 mm) hook. I absolutely loved this yarn, it was very soft and easy to work with. I was pleasantly surprised that this great value yarn is of such a high quality. I highly recommend it and will be using it for my own crochet projects in the future.

As I was working on the project, Robyn had realized having yarn sent to me that we used to live about 10 minutes away from each other before she moved away! What a coincidence. It is wild that we used to go to the same grocery store and did not even know it. World is so, so small. But I got a chance to meet her personally for the first time at TNNA and I have to note that not only Robyn is wonderful person to work with, but she's also very funny and I enjoy hanging out with her.

Interweave Crochet Accessories, 2011 - Preview is up

Interweave Crochet Accessories, 2011, the biggest issue ever with 59+ projects, is up for preview. This issue is really spectacular: It has 14 one-skein projects for last minute gifts, including mittens, cowl or hat. Of course you can find awesome shawls. My favorites are Lucille Shawl by Jill Wright worked in Bijou Spun Fingering Weight yarn by Bijou Basin Ranch, and Icarus Shawl by Tracy McCorcle worked in Brown Sheep Legacy Lace yarn.

I am absolutely smitten by Annie Modesitt's Jazz Bag worked in Trensetter Yarns Cha Cha & Merino VI Solids. This bag requires basic sewing knowledge, but the result gives you a very unique, designer-like bag for fraction of the cost.

If you ever wanted to learn how to crochet, this is a great issue to get because it includes a guide to crochet basics. You can learn how to do four basic crochet stitches, how to croche in circle, how to make granny square motif, small flower motif, or four-color spiral motif (really cool!). You can learn how to join seams and even learn how to make Freeform Bag.

Fancywork Cloche Hat

You can find also my new crochet hat pattern in this issue, the Fancywork Cloche hat worked in Alpaca With a Twist Socrates. The wavy texture of this hat is created with front post single crochet stitches worked every other round on the wrong side. The hat is worked in joined rounds.

The pattern is written in 3 sizes so it can be made for anybody: a small girl as well as a teenage daughter, or a hip mom. And since it takes only one skein to make, it is a great last minute gift project.

The Fancywork Cloche hat is also a great project for learning how to work post stitch. You can watch video on how to do it below.
